Summerbridge Cambridge 08/12/08

Tonight we had the honor of hosting nearly 40 volunteer teachers from the Summerbridge Cambridge program in Cambridge, MA.

If you are not familiar with the Summerbridge program here is a quick overview from their current website:

Founded in 1992, SBC is a year-round, tuition-free academic program committed to educational equity. It provides middle school students with challenging classes and enriching activities while training talented high school and college students for careers in education. SBC offers diversity, community, spirit, academic excellence and an energetic commitment to learning.

After visiting the program and observing the student teachers in action, we we’re moved (to say the least). The program is amazing and watching these young teachers encourage, motivate and educate over 100 middle school students literally takes your breath away. The program works. Over 90% of Summerbridge students go on to attend a 4 year college. Many of the student teachers go on to pursue careers in education.

We partnered with the great people from Alexandria Real Estate to host a fun dinner for the student teachers at Wagamama in Harvard Square. The teachers are amazing and every one of them stopped by our table to say thank you and talk about their experiences this summer. The student teachers work 12 hour days all summer to create a positive learning environment for their students. Their work is invaluable to the students who choose to spend their summer in the classroom…learning and growing.
